Privacy Notice

The Compass Alehouse, 7 Manor Road, Gravesend, Kent DA12 1AA. This notice explains what we do with information about you when you use this website. It is written in plain English on purpose.

Who is responsible

The Compass Alehouse decides what information this site collects and why, so we are the data controller. The site is built and looked after for us by SoftForge Ltd, who act only on our instructions.

To ask about anything on this page, or to make any of the requests below, write to us at the address above.

What we collect, and why

If you make an account

We ask for a name, a username and an email address. The email address is used once to send you an activation link, so we know the account belongs to a real person and not a machine, and after that to let you sign in and to reset a forgotten password.

Our lawful basis is that we need this to give you the account you asked for.

If you rate a drink

An account can score the beers, ciders and whiskies we have on. The score is stored against your account so that you can see what you have rated and change your mind, and so that the same person cannot score the same drink twice. What appears publicly is the average, never who gave which score.

Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running the pub well: knowing what our customers actually think of what we put on is how we decide what to buy next.

If you sign up to the newsletter

We ask only for an email address. We use it to send you news about the pub, what is on the bar, and events. Nothing else.

Our lawful basis is your consent. You can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link on every email, or by writing to us, and we will stop.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell, rent or share your information with anyone for marketing.
  • We do not track you around the internet, and we run no advertising on this site.
  • We do not use Google Analytics or any other analytics service.
  • We do not ask for anything we do not need. We have never asked for your date of birth, your address or your telephone number, and we do not intend to.

Cookies

This site sets one cookie. It is the session cookie the website software needs to keep track of you while you are signed in, it holds no information about you, and it disappears when you close your browser. It is what the rules call strictly necessary, which is why this site has no cookie banner: there is nothing to ask you about.

If we ever add anything that does need your permission, we will ask before it is set.

Who else sees it

The information sits on the web hosting that runs this site, and the company that provides that hosting can technically reach it in the course of keeping the servers running. SoftForge Ltd can reach it in order to maintain the site for us. Nobody else has it.

Your information is kept in the United Kingdom.

How long we keep it

  • Your account and your drink ratings: for as long as you have an account. Ask us to close it and both go.
  • Your newsletter subscription: until you unsubscribe.
  • An account never activated: we delete it, because it was never used.

Your rights

You can ask us to:

  • tell you what we hold about you, and give you a copy;
  • correct anything that is wrong;
  • delete it;
  • stop using it, or limit what we do with it;
  • hand it over in a form you can take elsewhere.

Write to us at the address at the top. We will answer within one month. There is no charge.

If you are not happy

Tell us first and we will try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK regulator, at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.

Changes

If we change how any of this works, we will change this page and the date below.
