Whisky of the Week #20
Benriach The Smoky Ten Single Malt Scotch Whisky 46%
The Smoky 10 offers an ideal introduction to the unique peat character of Speyside malts, using a high proportion of sweet and smoky Highland Peat. At a younger age, the smoky richness of the peat character is more distinctive and intense in flavour. Providing a smoky style that differs from the traditional Islay peated malts. The Smoky Ten has won multiple awards, including back to back double gold medals at the 2019 and 2020 San Francisco World Spirts Competition.
How does it taste?
Nose: Ripe orchard fruit syrup, smoky honey glaze and oak spice
Palate: Smoked applewood, honey maple and spiced pear
Finish: with lingering fruit and smoked oak
Why did I choose this Whisky?
As it’s Easter, and therefore spring, I wanted something to represent this change. Peated expressions of Speyside whiskies may not be a new thing, but they are quite different. I was also looking for a flavour base that wasn’t Bourbon whisky barrel. Vanilla is all very well, and present to a degree in most oaks, but different is what I was after. So we have a different and distinctive whisky that should reawaken your taste buds!
